For four generations, the Déry family has devoted all its energy to preserving and enhancing Île aux Pommes, a tiny natural island in the St. Lawrence River located in the Trois-Pistoles region of Lower St. Lawrence, Quebec.
Île aux Pommes was part of the Seigneurie de l'Isle-Verte from the time of New France until 1816. Several owners will follow one another over the decades, but the Déry family has owned it for almost a century (acquired in 1927).
Since 2004, the Île aux Pommes nature reserve has been recognized as a protected area for a perpetual period by the Quebec Minister of the Environment. Île aux Pommes is the first private island in the St. Lawrence River estuary to have obtained this status.
The Société de protection et d'aménagement de l'Île aux Pommes (SPAIAP) is a private foundation with charitable status whose mandate is to plan, coordinate and manage all protection and development activities on Île aux Pommes.
Recognized efforts
In 2007, the revitalization and conservation initiatives undertaken on Île aux Pommes were rewarded with the highest environmental distinction awarded in this field, a Phénix de l'environnement awarded by the Government of Quebec in the category Protection, restoration or enhancement of natural environments and biodiversity.
Recognized efforts
In 2018, Gaston Déry was awarded the Order of Canada for his contribution to the biodiversity of the St. Lawrence Lower Estuary by participating in the revitalization, development and recognition of Île aux Pommes as a nature reserve, thus ensuring its protection in perpetuity. His dedication to environmental protection and sustainable development is an invaluable legacy.
threat to human survival
The loss of biodiversity is the greatest threat to human survival on earth according to the UN Panel of Experts on Biodiversity (IPBES). " It is not too late to act, but only if we start to do so now, by making a transformative change in our society to slow the drivers of biodiversity loss that threatens humans at least as much as climate change," says IBES President Robert Watson.
Every little action counts
Take a concrete action and become a partner in our approach to bring about transformative change by protecting the biodiversity of a natural environment essential to the survival of our planet.
All funds raised are invested in the protection of the biodiversity of Île aux Pommes.
